The 2024 Taos delivers a signature VW experience with more convenient space requirements. It offers roomy seating, flexible cargo space, and many desirable amenities in a nimble, city-friendly package. It also represents an attractive value, thanks to its efficient performance and accessibly priced trim levels.

The VW Taos's excellent well-roundedness has earned it two Car and Driver Editors' Choice awards (2022, 2023). While there are plenty of compact crossovers to choose from, Taos delivers a complete package that's tough to top. To provide a few examples, here's a look at how it compares to two class competitors, the Subaru Crosstrek and Chevy Trax.

VW Taos vs. Subaru Crosstrek

• Interior and Practicality: While both models have roomy front seats, the Taos is more accommodating for rear-seat occupants. Compared to the Crosstrek, the Taos provides 1.4 more inches of rear legroom and nearly two extra inches of rear headroom. The VW Taos also offers more cargo space, with 27.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 65.9 with the rear seats folded. The Crosstrek's storage area is limited to 19.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 54.7 behind the first.


• Performance: The VW Taos's 1.5-liter turbo-four engine sends 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Subaru Crosstrek's standard powertrain is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder (152 hp, 145 lb-ft) paired with a less-refined continuously variable transmission.


• Features: The VW Taos makes several amenities more accessible at lower levels than the Crosstrek. For example, the second-tier Taos SE has heated front seats, heated mirrors, a wireless charging pad, and a power-adjustable driver's seat. These features for reserved for higher Crosstrek trims. The Taos also has equipment you won't find in any Crosstrek configuration, like a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, and a fully digital gauge cluster (standard 8-inch, optional 10.25-inch).

VW Taos vs. Chevy Trax

• Performance: Front-wheel-drive Taos models have a responsive and efficient 1.5-liter turbo-four engine (158 horsepower, 184 pound-feet of torque) that turns front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Or you can choose 4MOTION® AWD, which pairs with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Chevy Trax can't keep up with its 1.2-liter turbo-three (137 horsepower, 162 pound-feet of torque), six-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel-drive-only configuration. The 2024 Trax doesn't offer all-wheel drive.


• Accommodations and Practicality: The VW Taos makes good use of its interior space, providing ample head and leg room for all passengers, with 27.9 cubic feet to spare for your luggage, gear, or groceries. With the rear seats folded, the Taos's cargo area expands to 65.9 cubic feet. While the Trax is slightly longer, it has less rear legroom and a smaller cargo area - 25.6 cubes behind the second row and 54.1 behind the first.


• Driver Aids: The 2024 VW Taos comes standard with VW's IQ.DRIVE suite of advanced driver aids, including Front Assist (collision mitigation), Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. The entry-level Trax offers blind-spot and cross-traffic monitoring as options, but they're not standard for any model. Additionally, adaptive cruise control isn't available to lower Trax tiers.


• Features: The VW Taos lets you upgrade your Killeen commute with several amenities that the Trax doesn't offer in any configuration. Examples include a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro gauge cluster, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and leather upholstery.
